Making A Gourd Birdhouse

To make a gourd birdhouse you will need to have a cured goard (one that has been harvested and left to dry until the seeds inside rattle when the gourd is shaken). The mold and skin needs to be removed from the gourd. I've found the best way to do this is to immerse the gourd in hot water for several hours. I use a large tub with enough hot water to cover the gourds. They will need to be weighed down by placing something over them to hold them under the water.
After the gourd has soaked for 1 to 3 hours, you can easily scrape all the skin off the surface using a knife or some type of scraper. A metal scrubber works well to get the last little bits of skin off and smooth up the surface.
Using a circular drill bit about 1" in diameter, drill a hole about in the middle of the largest part of the gourd. The seeds and pulp (which is dry by now) will need to be scraped out of the inside of the gourd. I find that using a regular fork works about as well as anything to loosen up the pulp from the inside of the gourd. You may need to use your fingers to pull out some of the pulp and dump the seeds out. A little left inside gives the birds some nesting material. Drilling three or more small holes in the bottom will also allow for drainage of any rainwater that might get into the birdhouse.
The birdhouse can be hung by drilling a hole on each side of the top and threading wire or twine through and tying it to make a hanger.
The birdhouse should be coated with spray polyurethane - just as it is - or it can be painted and decorated first. These gourd birdhouses will last for many years and make an interesting ornament for your garden besides attracting birds to your backyard.
